ItsPaint for MAC

Free, open-source paint and screenshot markup app for Mac with step badges, arrows, pixelate, spotlight, background removal and PDF signing.

ItsPaint Overview

ItsPaint is a small paint and markup app for the Mac, built around a simple job: take or paste a screenshot, number the steps, point at things and drag the finished image into a bug report or a document. Its developer sums it up as MS Paint for the Mac. It marks up images with numbered step badges, arrows and callouts, a highlighter, pixelation and a spotlight that dims everything outside a box, and it paints too, with thirteen tools including pencil, brush, eraser, clone, fill and Instant Alpha selection.

ItsPaint is made by Josh Lin and released under the MIT license. It is still in beta and gets frequent releases. The app has no network access at all: it does not request the network entitlement, so the macOS sandbox will not let it connect. The GitHub build is signed and notarized by Apple, and the same app is free on the Mac App Store. Version 0.24.0 keeps text boxes editable after you place them, and files saved in its own .itspaint format stay editable when reopened. ItsPaint is a universal app for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs and needs macOS 14 Sonoma or later. The developer notes that pixelation hides detail but is not redaction, so secrets should be covered with a filled shape.

Key Features

ItsPaint turns screenshots into clear, annotated images.

  • Step badges: Numbered automatically, and a sequence can start at any number.
  • Arrows and callouts: Fifteen shapes, solid, dashed or dotted, outlined or filled.
  • Pixelate and spotlight: Blur detail with a mosaic or dim everything outside a box.
  • Screenshots: Capture a region or window straight into a new image.
  • Background removal: One command makes a flat background transparent.
  • Sign a PDF: Open a contract, sign it and save it back as a PDF.
  • Nine export formats: PNG, JPEG, TIFF, BMP, GIF, HEIC, AVIF, PDF and ICO.
  • Painting tools: Brushes with several nibs, selections, a pixel grid and snap to grid.

What’s New in Version 0.24.0

ItsPaint 0.24.0 keeps text editable.

  • Click a text box with the Text tool, or double-click it with the Select tool, to edit it again.
  • Selected words can get their own font, size, colour, bold, italic or underline.
  • Text saved in the .itspaint format stays editable next time; other image formats flatten it.
